Alicia's Favorite Holiday Things
We never stop lit-thinking even through winter break!
Welcome to From the Couch, where we open up discussions about all things media.
Just in case you need a reminder that yes, there is a Santa Claus, here are Alicia’s top four holiday films (and where you can stream them):
The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992) - If you haven’t seen all the memes celebrating Michael Caine’s rendition of Ebenezer Scrooge next to Muppets, you’re missing out. Seriously, I think it’s only rivaled by Patrick Stewart in the 1999 version of the Dickens story. (You can watch this one on Disney+)
Miracle on 34th St (1994) - Maybe it’s just the millennial in me talking, but I really love the 90s remake of this film more than the original. Both versions challenge our consumerist tendencies around the holidays. But only this one includes Mr. Hammond from Jurassic Park…(Enjoy it on Hulu)
The Polar Express (2004) - It’s so beautiful and amazing to think the same mind that gave us Jumanji also gave us this story. Tom Hanks, as always, is a gem. And even the early CGI adds some sort of magic to the soundtrack and wonder captured in this film. (Watch it on Max)
Klaus (2019) - We all know Netflix originals are a little hit-and-miss. But my partner and I actually make sure our Netflix subscription is live every December just so we can rewatch this film. It’s one of the most original Santa origin stories I’ve ever experienced…and it’s always guaranteed to make me cry a little. (Watch it on Netflix)
